Diversity Visa Program (DV Lottery) is an annually conducted Green Card lottery that provides 55,000 Green Cards without employer or family sponsorship. Every year, the lottery is conducted automatically via computer based system.

For 2015 DV Lottery applications, the E-DV system will be open for applications beginning noon Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on October 1, 2013, and ending at noon Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on November 2, 2013. We recommend DV program entrants to apply early. In the past, system delays caused by extremely heavy demand in the final days of the registration period have prevented some applicants from registering for the program. Although the system is upgraded regularly, overwhelming demand could cause delays. Please note no entries will be accepted after noon EDT on November 2, 2013, regardless of whether or not there are system delays during the registration period.

Some common mistakes in the online application process, which results in automatic disqualification include; omitting spouses and/or minor children; entering incorrect personal information; submitting more than one application for the same person.

Winners will have a chance to register themselves as green card holders from the beginning of the next fiscal year (i.e. September 1, 2014) until the end of the next fiscal year (i.e. September 30, 2015). We generally advise clients who are already in the U.S. in a non-immigrant visa status to adjust their status in the U.S. DV winners also have an option to process their green card applications through U.S. embassies abroad. This may be feasible for winners who already live abroad or whose case numbers are so high that they would be unlikely to adjust their status until the end of the fiscal year.
